Self and Partner Joconde c1800-c1899Self and Partner, 1873. Mr Gladstone, Liberal Prime Minister, shakes hands warmly with Mr Gladstone, Chancellor of the Exchequer. This cartoon relates to the state of Mr Gladstone's government at the end of the last session of parliament in the summer of 1873. The Liberals were weakening, as illustrated by a recent by election in Greenwich at which the Conservative candidate was returned with a very healthy majority. Gladstone was also experiencing
