The frame is walnut I believe, gorgeous rich color and the surface worn super smooth, with beautiful old metal wrap mends to each of the corners. Plus monograms carved deeply into each long end on one side, and long grooves on the other side. So much better in hand; really all about its objecthood, and nice and heavy and very sturdy.
