The great glasshouse on the Duke of Devonshire's estate at Chatsworth was designed and built by Sir Joseph Paxton (1803-1865) between 1836 and 1840

He is seen precariously balanced at the top of the structure with a variety of other figures beneath

Original is watercolour and gouache with scratching out on paper

According to textual notes this balloon reached a height of 324 feet on the third in a sequence of flights and carried two aeronauts : Jean-Franþois PilÔtre de Rozier (1754-1785) and AndrÚ Giroud de Villette
