I think it's just a terrific piece that makes me happy every time I look at it

as a means of responding to the changed conditions of its mid-20th century context

It appears to be carved of stone, perhaps lapis lazuli, but I am quite uncertain about that; aside from the color, the stone and the appearance of the carving makes it seem more akin in nature to jade.
