Perhaps a straight ahead portrait (with painted studio backdrop) turned into a mourning portrait as circumstances required it

but I've gotten so in the habit of listing everything

with one more pronounced area of loss  at the top of either side

Elsie Zimmerman's Full of Character Graphite Chair Drawing, c. 1930s wooden watermelon slice 6 3/8" x 4 1/2"This chair was one of a handful of school drawings found in Lancaster County PA by a young Elsie Zimmerman, c. 1930s I believe. I've come to recognize standard programs of drawing exercises for grade school students during various decades, and have had one other chair drawing of a similar ilk to this one, which I believe was part of the program during that period, an exercise in perspective I believe. I love it very much as a stand alone drawing one
